Winter 2024
We began this season by opening up membership to the neighborhood at large, gathering members - some new some old - for the forthcoming winter. We decided to have members choose their commitment season by season rather than for the whole year to allow for flexibility and change. This is also the first time we began charging a membership fee of $5 per family. We intend for the funds to go towards liability insurance, garden tools, things that need to be fixed or replaced, seeds, material for building infrastructure.
It’s been wonderful to see all the kids so actively gardening. Each kid seems to have their own unique way of engaging with the garden, which is a joy to watch. The kids have been busy collecting material to prepare for re-use: sticks, thick sunflower stalks, cane, rocks that we find in the soil. It is especially wonderful to see every kid finding their own limits and strengths, helping each other, and asking lots of questions about the gardening process, and of nature.
We are using one of the beds to experiment with cover crops - buckwheat specifically.
